Today we have the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce GTX 1060 O6G GAMING video card for evaluation. The name is long, and the engineering customization in-depth. ASUS has taken the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 GPU and built a completely custom, from the ground up, video card around this GPU taking it new heights. This video card is built for strong default performance and overclocking potential for any gamer or hardware enthusiast, with a little flare thanks to its RGB lighting.
ASUS has two distinct "STRIX" models based on the GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. Both video cards share the same features in terms of hardware customization and cooling. The differences are in the default clock speeds. The first one is the ROG STRIX GTX 1060 6G GAMING video card.
By default the "6G" video card runs at a base clock of 1506MHz and a GPU Boost clock of 1708MHz in "Gaming" mode. This matches a reference GeForce GTX 1060’s clock speeds. Therefore, this is not an overclock. The "6G" video card supports a software selectable "OC Mode" taking it up to a base clock of 1531MHz and a GPU Boost of 1746MHz. However this is achieved via software that you have to install, when you install this video card by default in your system it runs at reference GTX 1060 clock speeds.
The other card, and the one we are reviewing, is the ROG STRIX GTX 1060 O6G GAMING video card. The "O6G" literally means this is the OC Edition of the STRIX GTX 1060 video card. The default "Gaming Mode" runs at a base clock of 1620MHz and a GPU Boost of 1847MHz by default. This allows a higher gaming frequency while gaming. There is also a software selectable "OC Mode" which brings the base clock up to 1645MHz and the GPU Boost up to 1873MHz. Naturally you will find the GPU Boost runs above the quoted GPU Boost clock speed. You will see on the following pages just what this video card actually achieved by default.
Pricing is not cheap, the ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1060 O6G GAMING does carry a price premium for all of the STRIX features and overclock. The ASUS MSRP on this video card is $329.99, however ASUS has informed us that it is running a $20 mail-in-rebate in December. The video card is in fact available at $299.99 after $20 MIR at Newegg. It is currently $299.00 after $20 MIR with Prime Shipping at Amazon.
The ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce GTX 1060 O6G GAMING video card utilizes a custom built printed circuit board and custom DirectCU III ASUS cooling. ASUS is using 6+1 phase Super Alloy Power II components in hardware. This video card does require an 8-pin power connector.
The Direct-GPU contact heatpipe heatsink sits above the video card with ASUS Wing-Blade odB fan technology on the shroud. This video card does support ASUS FanConnect for GPU controlled fan headers for case fan operation.
This video card supports DVI-D, 2x HDMI 2.0, and 2x DisplayPort. To top it all off there is a backplate and ASUS RGB lighting that is customizable through software. The ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1060 O6G GAMING measures 11.73" in length.
